46Awards from Axel Springer
1966Journalism is worth celebrating. Over the decades, Axel Springer has established a rich tradition of awards that honor outstanding achievements in journalism, innovation and public life. These recognitions have taken many forms – from elegant gala dinners, such as the early editions of the Golden Steering Wheel awards hosted by BamS in the Journalists’ Club, to the highly produced multimedia experiences of the Axel Springer Awards, where each celebration was uniquely tailored to its recipient.
International visionaries such as Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk are among the distinguished recipients who have been honored over the years. Yet these are only a few examples from a much broader awards landscape that reflects the diversity of Axel Springer’s brands and values.
Among the company’s most renowned distinctions are the Golden Heart Award (Goldenes Herz) presented by Ein Herz für Kinder, the Golden Computer, the TRAVELBOOK Awards, and the B.Z. Cultural Award, which has become a fixture of Berlin’s cultural calendar. For aspiring journalists, the Axel Springer Prize for Young Journalism remains one of the most respected and sought-after recognitions in the profession.
The Goldene Kamera, presented by HÖRZU until 2015, was one of Germany’s most prestigious awards for television and entertainment personalities, often regarded as the German equivalent of the Oscars. Speaking of Oscars: Axel Springer had its own celebrated version. Until 2009, BILD presented the Osgar award, honoring outstanding personalities from the entertainment industry in Germany’s eastern federal states.
Together, these awards tell the story of a company that has not only shaped journalism and media, but has also celebrated excellence, creativity and achievement across generations.
