1978In 1978, publisher Axel Springer heard a radio report revealing that approximately 70,000 children were injured in road accidents every year in Germany. Deeply moved by this figure, he joined forces with BILD to advocate for greater road safety. Together with Friede Springer, he launched Ein Herz für Kinder (“A Heart for Children”).
Soon afterwards, the initiative’s iconic heart stickers appeared on millions of cars across Germany, becoming a widely recognized symbol of support and awareness.
What began as a road safety campaign has since evolved into an independent charitable organization dedicated to helping children in need—regardless of their background, religion, or ethnicity. Today, BILD hilft e.V. “Ein Herz für Kinder” supports both major international aid organizations and smaller local initiatives, as well as individual families facing hardship.
Each year, the charity’s flagship fundraising gala, broadcast on national television by ZDF, raises tens of millions of euros. Contributions come from across society—from children donating part of their pocket money to leading companies making six- and seven-figure commitments.
A defining principle of Ein Herz für Kinder is that 100 percent of all donations reach children in need. Axel Springer covers all administrative and personnel costs, ensuring that every donated euro directly supports charitable projects and assistance programs for children
