1959Before the war, the site now occupied by Axel Springer’s high-rise was home to the well-known publishing house of August Scherl. This issue of Berliner Lokal-Anzeiger – the “Central Organ for the Reich Capital”, founded in 1883 – recalls that history. In 1944, the Scherl publishing house was taken over by the National Socialists and merged with Berliner Morgenpost from Deutscher Verlag. Behind it stood the former Ullstein Verlag, which the Nazis had forced the Ullstein publishing family to sell in 1934 before renaming it three years later.
