1973A video disc on which spectacular football matches, educational programs and entertainment shows could be stored and retrieved at any time – without fixed broadcast schedules? What sounds almost ancient in the age of streaming was, in the 1970s, a glimpse into the future of media. Axel Springer was enthusiastic and invested in software for the TED Player (Television Electronic Disc), a precursor to LaserDisc, VHS and DVD. Unfortunately, he was ahead of his time. After just two years, production of the player was discontinued. Audiences did not embrace the new technology.
